University of Connecticut Health CenterThe Department of Family Medicine is pleased to sponsor an enrichment program for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year medical students with special interest and promise in Family Medicine. Participants in the Family Medicine Scholars program will develop close ties with department faculty through monthly seminars, a research/ scholarly project, and direct clinical care of selected families. These experiences are designed to enhance students' understanding of clinical and academic family medicine; facilitate individual growth and development, and provide guidance in career planning through one-on-one faculty tutorials and group sessions.
Program Components- Family Care: Each Scholar will seek out a clinical supervisor (community practice or UConn faculty) who will help select one family for the Scholar to follow for at least one year of longitudinal care. It is expected that the Scholar will be involved in all medical care decisions concerning his/her family.
- Seminars: Scholars gather together monthly throughout the academic year. The spirit of our seminars is to facilitate camaraderie and sharing of experiences and excitement within the field of Family Medicine. Topics for discussion will be chosen by group consensus at the beginning of the year, with a designated scholar helping to execute/finalize the seminar.
- Research/Scholarly Project: Each Scholar has the choice to pair with either a departmental faculty member, a member of the University or a community practitioner who will serve as a mentor for a project in an area of student interest. The project may be clinical, evaluative, or laboratory based, or be a critical review of the literature. A formal presentation to the scholars group is expected prior to graduation.
- Other: The Department of Family Medicine faculty members are eager and available to serve as medical school advisors and to assist the Scholars with personal and career concerns including residency program selection. Scholars may also attend other, regular departmental functions, including Grand Rounds, Journal Club and Family Medicine Interest Group activities. If you are interested in receiving a copy of these schedules, please contact Kelly Hookstadt, Predoctoral Coordinator, at 714-6529.
