Description of Program

Objective: To engage the student in a family medicine approach to the hospital care of adult and pediatric patients, and to experience the responsibilities of internship under the guidance and supervision of family medicine residents and faculty.

Activities: The subintern, under the guidance of the supervising resident and attending physician, will be the designated physician for a minimum load of 4 hospitalized patients at a time. Responsibilities for these patients include doing the histories, physical exams, formulating management plans, and writing progress notes. The subintern will be on call every 4th night, be present and participate at sign out rounds for his/her patients, and participate in all daily attending work and teaching rounds. The student will be responsible for making 2 formal presentations on topics regarding patient care encountered during the month.

Formal Teaching Activities: Bedside rounds occur daily with the team. In addition, the subintern will meet on 2 occasions with the family medicine attending to present and review one patient in-depth from a medical and biopsychosocial perspective. The subintern will attend weekly Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. Noontime conferences and other formal teaching conferences are also available for student attendance as duties permit.

Supervision: The student will be part of a team lead by a second and a third year family medicine resident and directly supervised by a family medicine attending. The administrative coordination and supervision of the clerkship will be the responsibility of Thomas Agresta, M.D. or if at Middlesex Hospital, Alan Douglass, M.D.
