Working for you locally and throughout the state, the Connecticut Academy supports your career and your specialty. Membership in the Connecticut Academy and the American Academy of Family Physicians provides you with the best of both in professional affiliation - local support and national strength. The following are some of the membership services of the Academy.


Continuing Medical Education

  • Produces in cooperation with the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians the Core Content Review of Family Medicine, the most comprehensive, practical and cost-effective self-testing, home study educational program available to family physicians in North America.
  • Provides family practice input to all professional organizations offering programs to family physicians.
  • Offers members and annual two-day Scientific Symposium recognized as one of the best educational programs of its kind in New England.
  • Evaluates and approves all educational programs for CME credit.


Hospital Privileges

  • Provides information to all members on hospital privileges and medical staff issues.
  • Assists members in handling hospital privilege problems when necessary.


Legislation

  • Watchdogs all legislation before the Connecticut General Assembly of concern to family practice and supports the legislative program of the Connecticut State Medical Society.
  • Supports the national legislative effort of the AAFP through letters, telegrams, and personal contact with members of the Connecticut Delegation.
  • Actively lobbies for legislation judged to be of significant importance to Family Medicine.


Public Relations

  • Published the Connecticut Family Physician, a monthly publication which is the official voice of the Academy in Connecticut.
  • Promotes Family Doctor Week in Connecticut.
  • Produces a Board Report to keep members abreast of developments in the areas of legislation, economics, and patient care.
  • Conducts a year-round publicity program to focus attention on the Academy and it's physician members and cooperates with all representatives of the press in the development of feature material.
  • Offers an Endowment Fund / Scholarship Program for needy medical students who show an interest in family medicine.


Medical Economics / Insurance

  • Watchdogs all aspects of third-party payments and conducts an ongoing liason with state and federal agencies such as Income Maintenance, HMOs, and Medicare.
  • The Scope of Practice Committee aggresively acts on issues affecting members such as formularies and reimbursement.
  • Facilitates the growth of Family Practice in the state by promoting practice opportunities and assisting physicians to identify opportunities to practice within the state.


Residents and Students

  • Offers positions on the Board of Directors and key committees to family practice residents and medical students.
  • Financially supports activities and educational programs of the Family Medicine Interest Groups at the University of Connecticut and the Yale University Schools of Medicine.
  • Underwrites participation of residents and students to the National Meeting held annually by the AAFP in Kansas City.


Administrative Activities

  • Holds an annual business meeting to keep members informed of Academy activities on the state and national levels as well as vital developments within organized medicine.
  • Participates in all national Academy meetings of importance to state chapters.
  • Serves as a permanent member of the Ten State Regional Conference, which provides an idea exchange among progressive Academy Chapters.
  • Represents the state at the Congress of Delegates of the AAFP.
  • Maintains individual membership records and educational credits leading to re-certification every three years.
