Family Medicine Interest Group (Yale) |
The Yale Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) is a dynamic and diverse group of students that are part of a national organization to promote the ideals of Family Medicine. The Yale FMIG is involved in numerous activities to educate the medical campus and the community about Family Medicine.
Some of these activities include:
- Biweekly Clinical Case Presentations: Family practitioners present topics ranging from the treatment of mental illnesses to sports medicine.
- Hands On Night: Students practice typical procedures and skills such as suturing, cyst aspiration, deliveries, and giving injections.
- Shadowing a Family Physician: Numerous opportunities exist to shadow a local family physician on a short or long term basis.
- TAR WARS Program: This program presents an opportunity for medical students to educate local elementary students about the downfalls of tobacco.
- Biweekly Office Hours: Dr. James Perlotto hosts office hours every other Wednesday from 1pm-3pm in the Student Affairs Office.
- Yale – UConn joint seminars on Alternative and Complementary Medicine
- Opportunities to hear speakers and discussions on topics including: "Family Medicine 101…What Your Yale Education Does Not Teach You", "Why I Love Family Medicine" by local doctors, and "Choosing A Medical Career at a Confusing Time"
- Yearly celebration for graduating medical students matching in Family Medicine: Graduating fourth and fifth years discuss how they navigated the Yale System
- Joint Injection Workshops: Learn how to inject an elbow or a knee before you do it on a real patient
- Opportunities to conduct summer research with local Family Physicians
- Meetings and discussions usually take place every other Wednesday from 12pm-1pm in the Dome Room of Sterling Hall. Lunch/dinner is provided. For specific details, read your medical school e-mails and posters or contact Corey Martin at
